Business Landline Call Forwarding Codes, by Carrier

How to forward your business line's calls when it is busy, when nobody answers, when the line is down, and all calls, and how to turn each off, for the main US business phone carriers.

Updated

Most US business phone lines forward calls with star codes: *72 and the number to forward all calls (*73 turns it off), *90 and the number when the line is busy (*91 off), and *92 and the number when nobody answers (*93 off). Digital and VoIP business lines often add *94 and the number to forward when the line is down (*95 off). The exact codes, whether you add #, and how many rings come first depend on your carrier and your service, and on traditional copper lines busy and no-answer forwarding is often a feature the carrier sets up for you. Find your carrier below.

Online portals instead of codes

  • Comcast Business VoiceEdge: the VoiceEdge portal > Feature Settings > Call Forwarding (Busy, No Answer with the number of rings, Not Reachable, Always). Status codes: *21* (all), *67* (busy), *61* (no answer).
  • AT&T Phone for Business: your AT&T account > AT&T Phone for Business > Manage my plan > Phone Features > Call Forwarding.
  • Verizon Business Digital Voice: the User Portal > Call Settings > Call Forwarding (Always, When Busy, When no answer with rings).
  • Cox Business: MyAccount (web or app) > call forwarding: All Calls, Busy, No Answer with the number of rings, Not Reachable and Selective. You need permission from your account administrator.
  • Lumen Voice Complete: Lumen Connect > Services > Service Tools & Portals > Voice Complete Features, with a no-answer ring count.
  • Kinetic Voice Manager (Kinetic digital voice): immediate, no answer, unavailable and selected callers.

What to know about business landline forwarding

  • On traditional copper lines (AT&T, Verizon, Frontier, CenturyLink), *72 turns on only after the number you forward to answers the setup call. Your AI receptionist answers it, which completes the setup; if it does not turn on, dial *72 again within two minutes.
  • Busy and no-answer forwarding on copper lines is often a feature the carrier sets up, with the number and the rings fixed by the carrier: AT&T turns it on by phone (800.288.2020), and Verizon and Frontier set the number in a service order.
  • Voicemail can block busy and no-answer forwarding: Optimum says lines with voicemail cannot use it. Turn off the line's voicemail, or set it to answer after more rings than the forward.
  • Call waiting can stop busy forwarding, and lines in a hunt group may need forwarding on every line or cannot use it.
  • Forwarded calls can be billed as local or toll calls, and toll-restricted lines cannot forward to toll numbers.
  • Codes vary by market: some areas use 72# instead of *72, and busy and no-answer forwarding is not offered everywhere (for example not in Florida on Frontier, and not in Florida or North Carolina on Verizon copper lines).

Using a cloud phone system instead?

RingCentral, Zoom Phone, Microsoft Teams, Google Voice, Nextiva, 8x8, Vonage, Ooma and the other cloud systems set forwarding in their apps and admin portals.

Forward to a local number

Forward to a number in your own country. US carriers do not forward to international numbers, and in Israel Bezeq forwards only to Israeli numbers, so your UIRIX agent's number should be local. Numbers come from 27 countries. In the US, Canada, Israel and Puerto Rico a number is ready at once; in 23 more, such as the UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Brazil and Mexico, the telephony provider first reviews your details and documents, usually in 1 to 3 business days.

What happens when the call reaches your AI receptionist

  • Your agent answers in your business's name, day and night, in 17 languages: it answers from your website and documents, takes messages and leads, books appointments where you connect a calendar, and can put the caller through to a person you choose.
  • When your carrier marks the call as forwarded, the agent knows it came through your line: it never reads your business number back as the caller's own, and it asks for a callback number when it needs one.
  • Calls are recorded (on by default), transcribed and summarized in your dashboard, and you can get the summary by e-mail.
  • If the agent transfers callers to a person, use a number that does not forward back to the agent (a mobile or a direct line), so a call cannot loop between the two.

Add the number after each "on" code. "-" means the carrier does not offer it with a code on that service. Codes checked against each carrier's guide on October 21, 2026; they can vary by market and by the features on your line.

Put an AI receptionist behind your business line

  1. 1

    Get the agent's number

Create your UIRIX agent and give it a phone number in your country in the dashboard.

  2. 2

    Set busy and no-answer forwarding

Dial *90 and *92 with the agent's number (or your carrier's codes), or set them in the carrier's portal, or ask the carrier to set them up.

  3. 3

    Call yourself while busy

From a second phone, call your business number while your phone is on another call (or you decline the call). Your agent should answer.

  4. 4

Call yourself and do not answer

Let it ring. After the delay you set, your agent should answer. If voicemail answers instead, voicemail is still catching the call first.

Business line call forwarding: common questions

On most US landlines *72 followed by a number forwards all calls to that number, and *73 turns it off. On traditional lines the number you forward to must answer the setup call before forwarding turns on.
They are the standard North American codes for forwarding when the line is busy (*90, off with *91) and when nobody answers (*92, off with *93). Many carriers use them, but some require the feature on your line first.
It depends on the carrier: Comcast VoiceEdge uses *610, Optimum Business *94 (2 to 9 rings), AT&T traditional lines *47 and a code, and many digital services set it in their portal. On some copper lines the carrier sets it for you.
The busy forward may not be on your line, call waiting may take the second call instead, voicemail may answer first, or the line may be part of a hunt group. Check the feature with your carrier.
