Claude Duet: What It Does and How to Give It a Phone Line (2026)

UIRIX Team 7 min read
Short answer: Claude Duet, the proactive agent Anthropic opened as a research preview on October 21, 2026, works through connectors and has no phone line of its own. Add the UIRIX connector to your Claude account and Duet gets one. Your calls show up in its morning brief, an AI voice agent places the callbacks you approve, and every call is followed up in the apps Duet already watches.

Below: what Duet is, what it leaves out, how it uses connectors, what changes with UIRIX, how to set it up and the limits to know.

1. What Claude Duet Is

Claude Duet is a separate app from Anthropic, on iOS, Android and claude.ai, in which Claude works as a proactive agent. According to Anthropic's announcement, it sends a short brief each morning on the most important items across your connected apps, checks those apps every few hours and messages you only when something needs you. It also keeps working on larger tasks while you are away. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you what it is about to do and waits for your approval.

Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and works with the connectors and plugins of the Claude Marketplace, more than 6,000 of them, from Gmail and Slack to HubSpot, Shopify, Stripe and QuickBooks. Anthropic built it for professionals and small business owners with too much to track. In October 2026 it is a research preview with a waitlist, for Pro and Max subscribers in the United States.

2. What Duet Leaves Out: The Phone

Duet works in text, inside the apps you connect. In its October 2026 preview it has no phone number, and it neither places nor answers calls. For many small businesses that is where the day starts: a missed call is a lost customer, and the lead who called this morning expects a callback.

Two more things follow from its design. Duet checks your apps every few hours, because, as Anthropic explains, checking nonstop would use up your plan's limits much faster. So it is not on duty during a live call. And an outside app cannot wake it the moment something happens. Anything that has to be decided while a customer is on the line must be decided in advance.

3. How Duet Uses Connectors

Duet works with the connectors of your Claude account. A connector is an MCP server, the standard Claude uses to work with other apps. Duet runs in Anthropic's cloud, so a connector has to be hosted at a web address; a program on your own computer will not reach it.

UIRIX is a hosted connector with one address, https://dashboard.uirix.com/api/ext/v1/mcp. Add it once on claude.ai and the same connector is there for Duet, with the permissions you approved when you signed in to UIRIX.

4. What Duet Can Do With UIRIX

UIRIX runs an AI voice agent that answers your business number, chats on your website and calls customers back. Connected to Duet, it adds the phone to everything Duet already does:
  • Your calls in the morning brief. Who called overnight, the new leads, the orders and appointment requests, and what still waits for you, with the names and numbers.
  • Callbacks after your yes. Ask "call back the two leads from last night at 10" and the UIRIX agent makes the calls, in the customer's language, and reports each result. A call is billed, so Claude asks for your yes first, and the connector refuses a call that is not marked as approved.
  • Follow-up in your apps. After each call, Duet can record the lead in HubSpot or the order in Shopify through the connectors it already has, and send the customer one follow-up message through the agent once you approve it.
  • Answers for the agent. When the agent could not decide something on a call, such as a discount, the question waits for you as a decision. Duet brings it to you and passes your answer on.
  • Errands for you. With a UIRIX Personal AI Agent, Duet can have your agent call the dentist to move an appointment or a restaurant to book a table, and tell you what was agreed.

5. Who Decides During the Call

Duet is not there during a call, so the UIRIX agent takes your rules with it. Standing orders, set by you or by Claude, say area by area what the agent decides alone and what it passes to you. By default it books appointments in your connected calendar, takes cancellations and changes as requests for you, quotes only the prices in its knowledge, and never takes a payment or card details. The call goes on without waiting for anyone, and whatever needs you reaches Duet at its next check or in tomorrow's brief.

The details are on the AI manager page.

6. How to Set It Up

  1. Create your agent. Build a UIRIX agent from your website address and give it a phone number, or a Personal AI Agent for your own calls.
  2. Add the connector on claude.ai. Open Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector, paste https://dashboard.uirix.com/api/ext/v1/mcp and sign in to UIRIX. The Claude and ChatGPT page has a button that fills it in.
  3. Choose what Claude may do. Switch on Outbound calls if you want Duet to have calls placed; it is off by default.
  4. Tell Duet what to watch. For example: "Put my UIRIX calls, new leads and anything waiting for me in the morning brief, and remind me of promised callbacks."
  5. Check it. Ask Duet "what came in on UIRIX yesterday?" and see the answer come from your agent.

7. An Example Morning

A dental clinic. At 5:30 Duet's brief says: four calls overnight, two new patients asking for a cleaning, and one patient asking to move Thursday's appointment, waiting for you. You reply: "Call the two new patients at 9 and offer times from the calendar. Tell the Thursday patient that Friday at 11 is free." Duet shows what it is about to do and you approve. At 9 the UIRIX agent calls both patients and books one, the other asks to be called next week, and the Thursday patient gets your message. By Duet's next check the results are in your thread, and the bookings are in the calendar.

8. Limits to Know

  • Duet is a research preview with a waitlist, for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, as of October 2026.
  • It shares your Claude plan's usage limits, and its background checks count toward them.
  • It checks every few hours, so it does not take part in live calls; standing orders cover them.
  • UIRIX calls are billed to your UIRIX account, and a phone number needs a saved payment card.
  • Duet refuses to share card numbers and government IDs, and the UIRIX agent never collects card details on a call.

Quick answers

Can Claude Duet make phone calls?

Not by itself. In its October 2026 preview Duet has no phone line. With the UIRIX connector it can have an AI voice agent call your customers, or call businesses for you, after your yes.

Does Claude Duet work with MCP connectors?

Yes. Duet works with the connectors of your Claude account, which are MCP servers. A custom connector has to be hosted at a web address, like UIRIX's.

Can Claude Duet answer my business phone?

No. The UIRIX AI agent answers your number around the clock; Duet reads what came in, briefs you and handles the follow-up.

Does Duet react to a call the moment it ends?

No. Duet checks your apps every few hours and sends a brief each morning. Decisions during a call come from the standing orders you give the UIRIX agent.

Does the UIRIX connector work in ChatGPT too?

Yes. The same connector works in ChatGPT and in Claude. See Claude and ChatGPT.

Conclusion

Claude Duet watches your apps and tells you what needs you. UIRIX gives it a phone: the calls you would have missed, the callbacks you approve and a follow-up for every customer. Add the connector on the Claude and ChatGPT page and see how the manager role works on the AI manager page.
